12 Major problems/prospects Due to raw material availability- The NR processing units are predominantly concentrated in Kottayam district, which is mainly due to the abundant availability of the main raw material, NR.
Due to Government Policy- The concessions made by Government has not made any significant impact on growth and development of rubber-based industries in Kerala, as this created only a multiplicity of units making similar products.
Slow growth rate- The growth and development of rubber based industries are erratic and not up to the desired level, considering the vast potential.
Low labor productivity- the low productivity of labor contributes considerably to the overall production costs. This in turn affects the growth and development of the industry.
Marketing problems- the marketing and distribution of products due to physical and logistical constraints and Kottayam is no exception to this phenomenon. Since the majority of the products are in the tiny and small sector, intended for the domestic and local markets, there is a lack of a strong marketing network.
Kerala climate is conducive only for small scale units- Due to the very high literacy of the population, there will be resistance to setting up of industries causing environmental pollution.
