12 | Major problems/prospects | Rising input costs in terms of cotton prices, labour and power cuts and increasingly competitive market for products offered by cluster firms have been affecting profitability of cluster firms. With power not available several hours a day, the option of exploiting alternate energy options including biomass based energy generation is critical without which viability of firms may be affected in the longer term perspective. The typical small-sized units in the cluster have limited linkages with Nationalized and other commercial banks affecting their performance potential. Typically, the assistance secured from banks has low limits. The fact that much of required raw material is sourced through traders has been affecting the potential performance of cluster enterprises. They are yet to explore joint and bulk purchase of inputs. Technology and productivity in many cluster firms are yet to pursue serious upgrading efforts. The reason may be ascribed to resource constraints for MSE’s due to inadequate credit linkages and capital intensity of some facilities like finishing and testing for SME and larger firms. There is an acute shortage of manpower in activities like stitching. |
